Object Name Quilt
Collection Rocky Pine Ranch Collection
Catalog Number 1999.1.14
Description Hand sewn patchwork quilt made by Lucinda MacMillan in the 1920's. The quilt was made by piecing many small triangles of cotton fabric together. It is backed with a cotton floral print fabric in blue and white. The batting is natural cotton and the quilt is tied with knotted yellow wool yarn.

The quilt is dated to circa 1920 by provenance and by independent examination of the fabrics. The backing fabric is especially telling. It is a floral print of white, sky blue, and dark blue. The sky blue color appeared in the early 1920's as did a variety of pinks. Quilts from this time period are characterized by lighter color overall, and simple designs of easy to make triangles, squares, or hexagons. Another clue to the quilt's age is in the black and white swastika patterned fabric. The swastika was a good luck symbol prior to its association with Nazi Germany. The swastika was officially adopted as the Nazi symbol in 1935.
